A little about Katin... so in 1954 a couple called Nancy and Walter Katin started a boat cover business in a town called surfside just north of Huntington beach, California. Their boat covers were pretty much bulletproof, using hundred pound tests, waxed nylon threadand nickel grommets. After a couple of special requests from local sailors, the Katins designed a few pairs of boating shorts. Although they were a hit and a success they decided they wanted to stick with boating covers.
A few years later. things changed for the Katins when a young and keen surfer approached them in their shop asking for a new kind of short designed for surfing. He spoke of his issues of surfing in old jeans with torn off legs and how the denim threads would quickly break leving him almost in the nude whilst walking up the beach. They worked together on a new kind of short. Little did the Katins know, this was the start of something big. The young surfer was called Corky Carroll and he would go on to be one of the worlds first professional surfers.
Corky's success and stylish surf short had people flooding into the shop for their very own pair of boardshorts and this was where the Katins journey and influence into the surf industry began. Almost 70 years later they are still creating long lasting clothing and have supported many professional surfers including ; Shaun Tomson, Tom Curren, Martin Potter, Sunny Garcia, and Kelly Slater.
